He realizes that it's much easier and effective to use his will and intelligence to convince others of his perspective instead of violence. Thus he can "slay" an enemy from a hundred paces without a weapon; he has the power to turn an enemy into a friend. In the final stage he realizes that the true purpose of conflict (whether it is by violence or ideology) should be to achieve peace and a greater good. His ability with the sword in his hand or in his heart has meaning and purpose..... and that purpose is to achieve a world where the "sword" is no longer needed. When that day comes, his sword will disappear and he will be ready to embrace the world."
